Honor Societies
Criteria for Induction 2019-2020 School Year
Information on Honor Society eligibility for the 2020-2021 school year is currently under review due to the impact of the COVID 19 pandemic
National Junior Honor Society
In order to be eligible for induction into the National Junior Honor Society and receive an application in the spring, students must meet the following requirements as reviewed the NJHS Committee:
Eligibility will be determined by criteria from Grade 6 through the first term of Grade 7
Students must maintain criteria throughout Term 2 of Grade 8 in order to maintain active status and graduate from middle school with NJHS status. In order to file an appeal, students must see the grade level school counselor.
Students will receive notices with their report cards indicating criteria for induction, students who are eligible will receive a final notice with their Term 1 Marking Period 2 report card which will require a parent signature and brought back the school counselor to receive an application.
Criteria for Induction:
90+ average beginning Term 1 of Grade 6 through Term 1 of Grade 7; must be maintained every term (NOT marking period average)
Evidence of Leadership, Character, Service, and Citizenship
No Suspensions; No more than five combined occurrences including infractions against Citywide Behavioral Expectations and N or U on your report card
A minimum of 12 hours of community service to be completed in 6th and 7th grade
Minimum of 12 community service hours must be completed by the first week of May in 7th grade
No more than 9 latenesses
No more than 9 unexcused absences
Documentation and notes regarding absences and latenesses will not be accepted from years prior.
National Honor Society
In order to be eligible for induction into the National Honor Society and receive an application in the spring, students must meet the following requirements as reviewed by the NHS Committee:

Students must maintain criteria throughout Grade 12 in order to maintain active status and graduate from high school with NHS status. In order to file an appeal, students must see their grade level school counselor.

Summer Youth Employment Program
The New York City Department of Youth & Community Development offers a Summer Youth Employment Program (S.Y.E.P) for local youth between the ages of 14 to 24. The Central Queens Y is proud to be an S.Y.E.P. provider that serves younger youth specifically between the ages of 14 and 15 years old. The program includes about 35,000 participants at 5,800 work sites, matching adolescents with entry level jobs at a variety of establishments, including government community agencies, summer camps, local businesses, museums, retail shops, hospitals, and sports enterprises, plus much more. The goal is to familiarize youth with the employment world and foster academic improvement and social growth.

Working Papers
Due to Social Distancing students will have a virtual meeting with a counselor
First Time Working Paper Applicants:
must be 14 years old
Completed top portion of application, signed by parent/guardian
Copy of your Birth Certificate, Passport, Driver's License or Driver's Permit
Note or letter from doctor stating you have went for a physical within the past year and are fit to work
Second Time Working Paper Applicants:
If you are getting working papers for the second time (ages 16 or 17) please bring your old blue card, a signed application and a note from your doctor.
